Welcome to Zoo Med Laboratories!

Here at Zoo Med, animals are our passion, and for 47 years we have made it our mission to supply the very best in exotic pet foods, reptile products, and reptile habitats. As a company made up of reptile hobbyists, we strive to provide the supplies and knowledge needed to successfully care for reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects and other exotic pets to keep them happy and healthy.

The reptile supplies, accessories, and tools we manufacture are first tested at our office on the private collection of animals we house here. Many of us have desk pets, and many of those desks are wedged into places inbetween the 200+ terrariums, aquariums, paludariums, and other habitats at our facility. Inside our Animal Room we house over 90 species ranging from chameleons, geckos, skinks, frogs, fish, newts, tarantulas, and beetles. Outside in our Turtle Nirvana Greenhouse, we care for 30 species of turtles and tortoises, several of which are endangered.

Breeding and caring for these animals daily sets us apart by giving us a clear understanding of fellow hobbyists’ needs and those of their animals. We love our pets and truly are a company of pet people for pet people!

Whether you are an experienced reptile snake breeder or gecko breeder working with hundreds of animals, or you’re looking into picking up your first pet bearded dragon, Zoo Med is sure to have what you need.

Founder and CEO of Zoo Med Laboratories, Gary Bagnall has announced the launch of his new Museum of Aquarium and Pet History. This museum features a huge depository of over 3,000 items that were historically used to keep pets, such as antique aquariums, bird cages, neon signs, squirrel cages, etc. This is the largest collection of antique aquariums and pet products in the world, and we’re excited to finally share it publicly.

Did you know there are actually 5 different subspecies of Leopard Gecko?
Here at Zoo Med we work with Eublepharis macularius, the Common Leopard Gecko, and Eublepharis fuscus, the West Indian Leopard Gecko.

This species is native to the forested hills and scrublands of Western India where it prowls in the early evening hours looking for tasty insects, including scorpions!

West Indian Leopard Geckos have a high amount of dark pattern coevering their heads, torso, and tails which is where the name "fuscus" comes from, which translates to dark or dusky.

Here at Zoo Med we have had some reproductive success which is when we learned the babies are quite vocal well into subadulthood!

Our store of the month for April is @neherpetoculture! Husband and wife duo Mike and Jessica run the business together and focus on being a bioactive specialty shop. They originally launched this unusual business model as “online only” back in 2012, but launched their in person store in 2022.

“Our goal with our new Plainville (CT) showroom was to help people with an active curiosity about animals & bioactive environments learn about professional grade husbandry, vivarium design, and plant care. Sharing the creative process with our customers 1-on-1 has been a great experience. The environments that we help folks create are more enriching for animals, and have the capability to be sustainable and self-cleaning in the long term. It`s a wonderful feeling to have a positive impact on the local enthusiast community and their animals.

The store has also allowed newer customers that are just starting out to ask questions and learn from our experienced members of staff. When folks leave the shop feeling confident about a terrarium project, we feel like we`ve done our job. We try to make the whole process as fun & enjoyable as possible.”

There are a few species bred in-house at New England Herp, and these are mostly passion projects for Mike:

“I`m a huge fan of New Caledonian Geckos. Gargoyles, Cresteds, Leachies, and Eurydactylodes are some of my all-time favorites due to their ease of care, personalities, and propensity to thrive in living terrarium environments. As far as difficult projects go, our Mantella, Glass Frogs, and Vietnamese Mossy Frogs have been ‘about ready to produce offspring’ for about a year now. We`ll have some eggs one of these days!"

Mike hopes to develop the store by adding a classroom and starting educational programs, while also increasing plant and product options. Already the store works with a local VOAG (vocational agriculture) program, and has lots of custom equipment like CNC machining, 3D printing, glass cutting, welding, woodworking, etc. to create terrariums for offices, zoos, museums, universities, and the general public.

Make sure to show this store some love this month!

Lovely testimonial about our Aspen Snake Bedding by @jkv.animals:

"I have now tried a lot with the garter snakes in order to be able to offer them the best conditions. The bioactive terrariums were beautiful, but sometimes too humid, so the snakes became sick. If the ground was drier, then unfortunately it was too dusty, which wasn`t good either.
Since these snakes dig a lot, these problems are much more serious than, for example, with my corn snakes, which are almost never on the ground.

Now I have decided to use aspen snake bedding from @zoomedlabs as a substrate. And what can I say... the snakes love it. They really dig tunnels that don`t collapse again, but remain intact. And it isn`t dusty!"

They will add #LeafLitter on top to add to the natural look of the tank while still using #AspenSnakeBedding as the base for burrowing.

Thank you @jkv.animals for the unsolicited review!
